Depression holds a range of symptoms, circumstances, and answers. According to the National Alliances of Mental Illness, it is a critical condition where medical help is highly recommended. In 2020, about 21 million adults- 8.4% have suffered an episode of depression at one point in their life. Symptoms can result in change of sleep, lack of concentration, change in movement, to name a few. Its causes can also vary from trauma, genetics, life circumstances, and drug and alcohol misuse. For a more relatable answer, I'll focus on one the symptom "hopelessness or guilty thoughts" This symptom I feel stood out is because for the longest time, whenever I told myself that today would be a good day, it immediately went downhill fast. Every worst case scenario would always happen. It got to a point where I closed myself around everyone and kept to myself. For those who wonder how I got through with this, I had an alternate approach; where my friend suggested I only tell myself I had a good day AFTER it the day had passed. Since then, its worked greatly, not that im immune to bad days, but I feel I can by better than I ever could in a long time. My case will be different from people who suffer from depression, no two cases are exactly the same. However, there are several treatments that include but not limited to: psychotherapy, medication and exercise.
