The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People One person listening while the other speaks.

Stephen Covey · The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Seek first to understand, then to be understood

People defend themselves when they feel unheard. If you speak first, you often have to say it again later, louder.

Listen until you can say their view in a way they accept. Then your point has somewhere to land. The order is the whole habit.

Use it. In the next hard talk, repeat their view before you add yours. Stop when they say you have it right.
